7-0 Wood/Kevlar Slider

The fusion of high-tech materials and wood has arrived! This Kevlar covered wood board idea was born out of an earlier board I had built, which ended up failing due to the construction materials I had used. I used Agave cactus for the rails which ended up not being strong enough and causing the board to leak. I had to retire it, but wanted to replicate the board as well as I could. I also wanted to build it strong as could be, and have always been curious about using Kevlar fabric.

Working with Kevlar was a challenge, as it is a bit thicker and stiffer than the normal fiberglass, and it will not sand!!! That of course is one of its properties, abrasion resistance. I also decided to cut out the center section of Kevlar to show the wood construction underneath. In the end, using Kevlar wasn’t too bad , and the results speak for themselves.

As far as wood choices go, I used madrone, black walnut, and purple heart walnut as the top deck, with recycled cedar as the bottom deck. The fins are sycamore, with a bead of Kevlar in the front. The leash cup was hand-turned out of black walnut and purple heart, the tail block is black walnut, and the wood burning on the nose is of Africa. I also decided to put a finbox in, just in case I ever wanted to play around with a center fin setup. The board was glassed with Entropy Bio Resin, with Kevlar and 6oz fiberglass on bottom, and a single 4oz layer on top.

I’ve surfed the board a few times now, once in overhead surf, and it was awesome. It surfs exactly like the previous one, which I’m really stoked about. Snowboard style takeoffs, sliding sideways, 360′s, and a really fast, loose ride! I love it.

Custom 9-2 Redwood Pintail for Wyatt

Wyatt’s custom Ventana longboard looking good as the man himself!  Standing 9’2″ the redwood and cedar pintail was inspired by a Bob Pearson design that Wyatt had surfed years ago.  The board is made of reclaimed redwood that we salvaged from a deck in Boulder Creek just inland from Santa Cruz.  The Redwood has a truly beautiful grain that photos just cant do justice.  The ray running through the board is scrap cedar.  Redwood twin fins are glassed on close to the rail, far back in the pin to increase the maneuverability whilst keeping the board from sliding out.  I had the pleasure of seeing Wyatt catch his first wave on the board out at middle peak, and you could hear him hooting and hollering all the way on the cliff. -Tyler

Salvaged Redwood Surfboards!

We received a phone call a while back from a Boulder Creek woman who was tearing the redwood deck from her home in the Santa Cruz Mountains.  She had heard about our surfboards, (and love of recycled wood) and wondered if we would be interested in checking it out.  The deck was built in the early sixties from choice straight-grained redwood which has a beautiful dark brown glow.  We sliced into some of it right away and are very excited about the possibilities.  If anyone is interested in getting a custom redwood surfboard built for them please contact us via email or phone and we will set you up with a very special board.

We would like to thank Elaine for the wonderful donation, and encourage everyone else to turn their scrap wood into a Ventana shred machine!

Art At The Barn December 10 & 11

Ventana Surfboards are on display at our friend Luc’s  ”Art at the Barn” show, a showcasing of local talented artists. The setting is a really cool old barn in the middle of Live Oak, and the art inside is quite amazing. Stop by if you can, there will be music this evening, BYOB, and lets all have a good time. The address is 1352 El Dorado Ave, Live Oak, CA. The show opens at 10AM, but the real party will be after sundown. What a great weekend with plenty of swell and cool things going on in our little Santa Cruz.

The Redwood Glider

The Glider is built for forward trim surfing, quick turning, and down-the-line effortless speed.  It can be ridden in two foot soup, or overhead surf.

The deck is built from scrap poplar, and some very special redwood.  The redwood was given to us by our good friend Alberto (aka Birdo).  Alberto cleared a small grove of trees up in Bonny Doon some 30 years ago to help his godfather build a workshop.  The leftover wood was milled, stacked, and left to cure until now.

German Journeyman

This past month we were lucky enough to have a travelling Journeyman from northern Germany come work in our shop with us. Niklas has been travelling for the past 3 years, working in different wood shops throughout the world, gaining skills and knowledge as he travelled. We managed to build a couple of nice boards together, and shared many techniques and recommendations. This was his first surfboard, but being at home in the shop he did an awesome job. We didn’t manage to complete the board before he left for Germany, but we were at about 95% done. It will be going to the glassers soon, so check back to see the finished product…

Of course we also took him to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk for some fun!

Building a sign

We made a sign yesterday from a piece of redwood that was given to us, and some scrap pine.  the grain on the redwood is simply amazing.  Stop by and check it out!
