The Ventana Bow & Harrow Pens and boxes are a collaboration with Kate Harrow. Kate makes heirloom-quality pens, custom furniture, small household items, and more in her Los Angeles studio. Like Ventana, she specializes in using wood with a story. We provided Kate with pieces of wood and resin that have deep backstories to use in the creation of these extremely limited-edition pens, and we designed and crafted boxes to match.
The medium ballpoint writes very smoothly, and the smudge-free ink is in Schmidt Easy Flow 9000 Parker-style refill.
The pens themselves are slightly more compact than a standard pen and fit nicely in a pocket. They are solid metal alloy and either antique steel or gold color.
The pen materials come from one of three sources:
1. Douglas fir from the hull of the Western Flyer, considered by many to be the most famous fishing boat in the world. John Steinbeck, Ed "Doc" Ricketts and crew sailed this 77-foot sardine boat into the Sea of Cortez in Baja California, Mexico in 1940. The following year, Steinbeck published his book, The Log from the Sea of Cortez, about the adventure. Learn more about this amazing boat and Ventana's use of its wood.
2. Salvaged redwood from Cabernet Sauvignon wine tanks provided to us by Alibi Interiors in Aptos, California.
3. Entropy Resins bio-based epoxy drippings collected after the glassing of Ashley Lloyd Surfboards by Locus Surfboards. For these pens, the boxes are made of Alaskan yellow offcuts from the Western Flyer boat restoration project.
4. Salvaged elm from felled trees on the campus of San Jose State University by way of USA Millwork.
Use one of these quality pens to write notes, stories, and poetry on your next surf adventure.
